Is a Master Data Management (MDM) program really a crusade? A crusade is defined as a vigorous, aggressive movement for the defense or advancement of an idea or cause. Similarly, an MDM program is a vigorous, aggressive movement waged against poor quality data and improperly used data in the face of tight delivery deadlines, budget reductions, and corporate politics. An MDM crusade requires a systematic course of offensive and defensive moves to win these battles and hold previously gained ground. This tutorial will share the experiences of a director-level manager who led multiple MDM programs in organizations across diverse industries. Case studies will be presented that span phases from building the initial business case, through product selection, implementation, and several years of production.

Covered topics include:

  • Persuading leadership to commence an MDM program crusade
  • Effective tactical and strategic battle moves
  • Performing reconnaissance activities for prospective target master data domains
  • Establishing data governance in newly acquired data territories
  • Countermeasuring “alternative facts” during software product evaluation
