Most data model subje ct areas describe things in the world: people and organizations, contracts, oil wells, etc. Two, however are “Meta-data”— manag ing information resources and accounting. This presentation is about the fi rst of these - documents, photographs, e-mails, drawings and videos, e tc. These may be physical or electronic, but in either case, managing such a resource includes keeping track of the creation, distribution, and dispos ition of that resource.
\nMuch more important about information resou rces, however, is that each must, by definition, be about somethin g. It is defined as having one or more “topics,” each of which could be a reference to any other entity, fact, enti ty type and/or fact type in the organization. Thus, modeling the collection of underlying concepts and their links to the rest of the enter prise’s data model is a challenge.
\nThis entails:
\n\n Relating it to the one or more parties (people and organizations) that prod uce, modify, and/or consume it. \n Identifying the things (entities and entity types) in the enterprise that i t describes.\n Recording facts and fact types (relationships) about those things. \n Recording its distribution and ultimate disposition.\n\nUltimately, the model of information resources is itself a metamodel of the enterprise&rsqu o;s data. Producing a data model that describes this is challenging. P resenting such a data model is the objective of this presentation.
