 ty.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=126&proposalid=10188\nAn Enterprise Data Model
(EDM) provides major benefits, and therefore very high value to an organiz
ation. It provides context and consistency for all organizational data asse
ts, as well as a classification framework for data governance. With today&#
39;s increasingly complex data ecosystems, the Enterprise Data Model is a s
trategic imperative that every organization should adopt. Without it, strat
egic alignment is unattainable, leading to inefficiency, confusion and conf
licts in business operations. Unfortunately, in many organizations, short-t
erm thinking has led to decreased focus on data architecture and enterprise
modeling in particular. Short-term projects are taking precedence, sacrifi
cing consistency and accuracy. Naysayers will state that an Enterprise Mode
l is difficult and expensive to build, and contradicts agile methodologies.
In reality, an Enterprise Model is an investment, not an operational cost.
When done properly, it provides the necessary design framework for all pro
jects, including agile. Enterprise modeling is also totally consistent with
agile, evolving incrementally to keep pace with changing organizational fa
ctors. This session will discuss the increasing importance of the EDM, how
it serves as a framework for all enterprise data assets, and is a foundatio
 n for data governance.
