The role of a central catalog of business terms, defining the core language of the business was often seen as a luxury in many DW deployments. One reason was because the d ata model schemas used often provided sufficient information around the met adata of the DW. However, for the data lake such a precise layer of busines s semantics is critical as a foundation for the governance of the multitude of different data stores - with and without schemas - and processes that p otentially will make up a data lake.
